Diamond Education Guide
Choosing a diamond doesn’t have to feel complicated. From understanding the 4 Cs, to comparing diamond shapes and natural vs. lab-grown diamonds, our Diamond Education Guide covers the essentials to help you shop with confidence.
Whether you’re choosing an engagement ring, investing in a piece of fine jewellery, or simply learning more about diamonds, consider this your starting point.
The 4 Cs—Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat Weight—are the internationally recognized standards used to evaluate a diamond’s quality and value. Understanding each of these characteristics will help you choose a diamond that fits your style, priorities, and budget.
While every diamond is unique, cut is often considered the most important of the 4 Cs. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, creating the brilliance and sparkle that diamonds are known for. Even a diamond with excellent colour and clarity can appear less vibrant if the cut isn’t ideal.
Natural diamonds are formed beneath the Earth’s surface over billions of years, while lab-grown diamonds are created using advanced technology in a controlled environment. Both have the same chemical, physical, and optical properties. The choice ultimately comes down to your personal preferences and budget.
Choosing a diamond shape is one of the most personal parts of designing a ring. Popular options include:
* Round
* Oval
* Emerald
* Radiant
* Cushion
* Pear
* Marquise
* Princess
* Asscher
* Heart
Each shape offers its own unique style and personality, and we’re always happy to help you find the one that best suits you. We've seen combination shapes emerge recently, such as a moval (a combined Marquise and Oval cut), and other unique variations such as antique diamonds, or coloured diamonds.
Diamond clarity measures the presence of natural inclusions and blemishes within a diamond. Most inclusions are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye. Common clarity grades include:
* FL (Flawless)
* IF (Internally Flawless)
* VVS1–VVS2
* VS1–VS2
* SI1–SI2
We’ll help you choose a clarity grade that offers the best balance of beauty and value. When opting for a lab-grown diamond, the clarity is typically VVS1 - VVS2 which is extremely high end. When selecting a natural diamond, we hand-pick the diamond that suits your preferences for clarity.
Diamond colour refers to how colourless a white diamond appears. Diamonds are graded from D (completely colourless) through Z (noticeable colour). Higher colour grades are rarer, but many diamonds in the near-colourless range can appear beautifully white if they're selected properly. Some people prefer warmer tones, and may actually prefer a diamond that is slightly lower in colour i.e. K or L colour. This will give a warm glow to the diamond which offers a unique aesthetic and look to the overall ring. When opting for a lab-grown diamond, the colour is typically D or E colour, offering maximum whiteness. When selecting a natural diamond, we hand-pick the diamond with the colour that suits your eye and budget.
Carat measures a diamond’s weight—not necessarily its visible size. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can appear different in size depending on their cut, shape, and proportions. A good way to assess carat weight is by looking at the measurements of the stone.
The perfect diamond depends on your style, priorities, and budget. Some people prioritize size, while others focus on sparkle or clarity. During your consultation, we’ll help you understand the differences so you can confidently choose the diamond that’s right for you.
Lab grown diamonds have the same chemical composition, brilliance, and durability as natural diamonds. Visually, they are almost identical to a natural diamond.
