Jewellery Maintenance FAQ
We often get questions about details on how to ensure your pieces stay in their optimal conditions. Here are the most common questions:
-
How do I keep my engagement ring clean?
To avoid getting your engagement/wedding ring dirty, remove it before activities like cooking, cleaning, or exercising, as these can expose the ring to oils, dirt, and harsh chemicals. It's also helpful to store your ring in a safe, dry place when not in use to keep it clean and free from damage. To keep your rings clean, a toothbrush and soap works wonders for removing dirt and buildup on your ring.
Sweat, chemicals, and lotions can tarnish or damage the metal and gemstones. It's also important to store your jewelry in a clean, dry place when not in use to keep it free from dust and residue.
-
How often should I tighten the stones on my engagement ring or wedding band?
You can check your stones yourself by lifting your ring up to your ear, and giving the ring a little tap. If you hear the stones jiggle, then that means they’re loose. You can also push down on your stones and see if you can spot any movement. If you see a diamond move, then it is loose.
Check your rings periodically (every couple of months).
It doesn’t hurt to schedule an appointment to have your rings checked and cleaned yearly.
-
How to keep my fine jewellery from breaking?
To avoid your fine jewellery breaking, we recommend avoiding sleeping in your pieces, working out in them, and doing strenuous activities in them. Bracelets are typically the most susceptible to breakage given wear and tear and peoples’ tendencies to leave them on through all activities.
If you find your bracelet is continually breaking, consider shortening it so it’s tighter to the wrist and less likely to get caught on things!
-
Should I be sleeping in my jewellery?
No! Fine jewellery is delicate. Whether it’s a large piece or a 1mm chain, gold is malleable and therefore susceptible to breakage if not carefully handled. Sleeping in your fine jewellery can cause breakage, tangling, and denting.
We see that breakages occur most often amongst those who “never” take off their pieces.
We advise removing bracelets, rings and necklaces before bed. It is ok to sleep in your earrings, such as studs and huggies.
-
Can I shower in my jewellery pieces?
Technically, yes. Fine jewellery is very different from fashion jewellery as it will not tarnish. However, your shampoos, conditioners, etc, can actually make your pieces pretty dirty and in some cases, change the colour on your gold jewellery.
-
How to care for hollow pieces?
Hollow pieces are one of the beauties of fine jewellery as they provide the look of thick and chunky gold at a lower price! However, due to their hollowness, they are delicate. Hollow jewellery means that the links are filled up with air, not gold, making them more prone to bending and breaking while tossing and turning at night. Avoid sleeping in them as they can dent easily and store them in a safe place.
-
Should I get my bridal set in gold or platinum?
Our team always prefers working with gold (14 or 18 karat) for bridal jewellery. If opting for a white gold ring, platinum avoids the need for rhodium, but has a less lustrous finish compared to gold.
If you opt for white gold, and you wear your rings daily, it doesn’t hurt to clean and dip them every year so they have a fresh coat of white rhodium on them. The rhodium coating makes the white gold metal look bright and white.
If you are diligently removing your rings before applying lotions, washing hands, etc, you’ll find that the rhodium coating should last longer and you may not need a yearly dip.
-
Should I travel with my fine jewellery?
When traveling with fine jewelry, always store your pieces in a travel jewelry case with compartments to prevent scratching or tangling.
For added security, keep valuable items in your carry-on bag rather than checked luggage to minimize the risk of loss or theft. It's also a good idea to insure your jewelry and keep a record of the items you're bringing, just in case anything goes missing while you're away.
To avoid theft, we always recommend bringing pieces that you’ll wear daily so you don’t leave anything special in a hotel room.
-
Should I insure my wedding ring?
We think so! Talk to your insurance broker to understand the pros and cons of each plan that is available to you.
